The following is a historical recap of the 210 Shelburne Street site by Constance Whittemore. The first gas station at this address was built in 1938 as a business for Clark Hinsdale, who was at the time also listed in the Burlington City Directory as a jewler, working at Preston's on Church Street. (Mrs. Hinsdale was a member of the Preston family). This Amoco station was sold in 1940 to Charles E. Whittemore. Winston and Constance Whittemore ran the station until the mid 1950's. Mrs. Whittemore, now still active in her 90's, recalls that their purchase of the station was Tony Pomerleau's first real estate transaction. It was a small, wooden building. In the 1938 Burlington City Directory the station is listed as Paul's Sterling Station, run by Paul Manga, who lived at 310 St. Paul Street. By 1960 it was Jim's Sterling Station, and other owners followed. The next big change came in the summer of 1964, when the owners obtained permits to demolish the old, smaller station to build a new, modernist structure much as it stand today. The Pizzagalli Construction Company did the job. The restoration and transformation of the building in 2008 into a neighborhood restaurant has preserved the distinctive features of this unique structure, and given it a new life as a neighborhood gathering place. - Constance Whittemore |
