Burlington city planners say The Spot's turbine is historically out of character on the gas-station-turned-cafe. In their estimation, it breaks the terms of his permit — and have slapped him with a violation notice that he is now appealing.

More than 500 million straws are used in the U.S. every day, which averages out to 1.6 straws per person. So that means in Vermont alone 1 million straws are being plunked into drinks on a daily basis.

The quirky former gas station that houses surfer-chic café The Spot on Shelburne Road in Burlington has a new appendage to fascinate passersby: a wind turbine. In October, Williston-based renewable-energy company Yellow Brick helped The Spot’s owner, Russ Scully, install a prototype made by Honeywell.

Then there's the Preservation Burlington tour's home base on Shelburne Road, a structure so familiar to Burlingtonians they probably don't look at it twice: The former gas station became The Spot. Colman calls the café's striking triangular canopy "classic modern design."
